Mike Weller
is the creator and host of
Good News Hagerstown which airs the 2nd and 4th
Wednesday of the month at 2pm on WJEJ. Mike is also a part-time D.J.
at WJEJ. Mike says of his relationship to WJEJ.. "Music and radio are
important components of my family’s culture. Our cousin, WJEJ’s John
Staub, has owned a radio station throughout my entire life. I have
vivid memories of John giving records to my parents and asking for
their comments on the artist. I first heard Patsy Cline on a 45 given
to my Dad by John. My Mother and Aunt (members of the Harmony Trio)
performed live at the grand opening celebration of WJEJ in the
Franklin Center. The vision of Good News Hagerstown came after I became frustrated with the level of disturbing commentary that seemed to be overwhelming both print and broadcast media. I pitched the idea of Good News to Joanna Staub (the younger sister I never had, but wished I did). She and John liked the concept and Good News was born in September 2005. My motivation for joining the Hagerstown Broadcasting family was three-fold: First, I wanted to help WJEJ continue its tradition of contributing an important public service to the community. Second, I was searching for a medium to reach people from all walks of life with safety information. Third, I enjoy radio and I like the culture of Hagerstown Broadcasting Company. My time with WJEJ has produced new friendships, both with staff and listeners. I quickly surpassed my original expectations of reaching the community with safety information. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a broadcasting family that provides a service that is quickly disappearing from many communities: Real, live and local radio. God bless WJEJ and its loyal listeners on this monumental celebration of 75 years of service to the Hub-City and Cumberland Valley. PS – I enjoy sneaking a good ole traditional country song past the "Music Police" every now and then. My parents would be proud. You can’t do that on automated radio!" Mike is also the Public Fire Safety Educator for the City of Hagerstown.
