City Farmers' Market Celebrates 230th Birthday!
It was once proclaimed, “By the General Assembly of Maryland… Be it known… That from and after the twentieth day of August, 1783, there will be a market house built and established in the town of Elizabeth.” Now 230 years later, the Historic City Farmers’ Market stands as the oldest, continuously active operating farmers’ market in the State of Maryland and the second oldest farmers’ market in the United States.
This weekend, the staff, vendors and customers of the Historic City Farmers' Market will be celebrating the Market’s 230th birthday with cake, giveaways and extra activities and festivities!
The celebration will begin on Saturday, August 17th at 8:00 a.m. with an expanded children’s area for decorating birthday cards and making treats and trinkets. There will be a cake-cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. and a City proclamation will be read. Numerous giveaways will take place throughout the day; please look for signs around Market noting the times of each one. Giveaways will include our new reusable Historic City Farmers’ Market shopping bags, Market ornaments and other unique items. Visit the Historic City Farmers’ Market Facebook page for daily updates on all the happenings on this unique event! See: https://www.facebook.com/historiccityfarmersmarket. All activities will last until the close of Market or while supplies last.
The Historic City Farmers’ Market 230th Birthday Celebration also serves as a “Thank you” to all the customers, vendors and staff of the City of Hagerstown and Market who have had a hand in sustaining the Market’s great longevity in our city, county and state communities. The Historic City Farmers’ Market is an important element to the many visitors who buy local produce, catch up with friends and neighbors, or visit a new place for the first time in their weekly Saturday schedule.
Every week the City Farmers' Market vendors offer fresh, local produce, delicious baked goods, tasty treats (for both two-legged and four-legged friends of the Market), unique arts and crafts and fresh meals for breakfast or lunch. The Market is located at 25 W. Church St. and is open Saturdays from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Market activities are subject to change and availability.
