Sept 21 - New Horizons Band Concert

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21 at Hagerstown Regional Airport: NEW HORIZONS BAND CONCERT CELEBRATES 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM Hagerstown MD -- The New Horizons Band of Hagerstown Maryland celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner with a concert on Sunday September 21st at 1:00 PM. The concert will be performed at the Hagerstown Airport as part of the Wings and Wheels Expo held annually by the Hagerstown Aviation Museum and is open to the public. The New Horizons Band Concert -- A Star Spangled Celebration -- will include American and Patriotic music along with a rare performance of The Pegasus March, written by Dr. Peter Buys in 1952. The Pegasus March was commissioned by Fairchild Aircraft and airport dignitaries will be on hand to hear the first performance in more than sixty years. The concert will also feature traditional band music from the 1800's including an 1812 Fife & Drum version of Yankee Doodle, military marches, Broadway show tunes and movie music. The New Horizons Band of Hagerstown Maryland is now in it's seventeenth year of performances. This unique musical organization is composed of retired adults and senior citizens who enjoy playing music together and performing for the public.

Sept 20 - Dining for Doey's House Spaghetti Dinner & Auction

Saturday, September 20th is the big day for the "Dining for Doey's House" Spaghetti Dinner and Auction that Donna Allen and her crew are putting together. Doors open at 3:30, Dinner Buffett begins at 4:00. Neal Glessner talks about Doey's House at 5:00, silent auction closes at 5:45 and the live auction will begin at 5:45 with auctioneer Tom Riford! Sept 25 - Emmanuel U.M. Church Summit Supper Community Meal

Emmanuel United Methodist Church 802 Summit Ave will be hosting their monthly free Summit Supper Thurs Sept 25, 2014, 6:30 p.m. All are invited to this community meal, and most welcomed to free music following. October 1 - Public Workshop for Arts & Entertainment District

Community members are invited to participate in a public workshop to discuss potential amenities that would be featured along the trail linking City Park and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts with the Arts & Entertainment District. The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, October 1st in Council Chambers. The trail is one aspect of Catalyst Project #5: Linking City Park/Washington County Museum of Fine Arts (WCMFA) and A&E District with Trail and New Housing as part of the Community's City Center Plan.                  Before the workshop, participants can meet at Park Circle at 5:30 p.m. to walk the proposed trail alignment. The walk is anticipated to be finished by 6:15 p.m. and will be held rain or shine. See attachment for the proposed trail alignment.                   The workshop session to discuss ideas for the design of the trail will be held in Council Chambers from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The City has hired Mahan Rykiel Associates, a landscape architecture firm, to design the components of the trail. The firm's previous projects with the City include the garden and fountain area at Pangborn Park and University Plaza. Scott Rykiel will lead the workshop to collect feedback and ideas to be incorporated in the design. The discussion will include consideration of a name for the trail, a potential theme and the features it should include. The hope for the community is to create a trail that will become a keystone destination in the City Center. Participation from the community is a crucial factor in achieving the goals of this catalyst project and the Community's City Center Plan in its entirety.                   Community members who are not able to attend the workshop are invited to submit their thoughts and ideas on the engageHagerstown website. Sept 20 - Special Worship Service at Hager House in City Park

 Sunday, September 21, 11:00 am There will be a special worship service  at The Hager House in City Park, Hagerstown.  (Festival is Saturday September 20 from 10:00am - 4:00pm Sponsored by the Washington County Historical Society)   Not only is it the 275th anniversary of the Hager House, also, on August 10th, the Old German Church in Hagerstown (Zion Church) commemorated it’s 240th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for the Sanctuary. Zion Church stands on land that was donated by Jonathan Hager. It is the same church where Jonathan Hager met his untimely demise when a heavy beam fell on him in the course of it’s construction, and where his remains are interred.    Recognizing the connection between Zion Church (which has had uninterrupted congregational worship since 1770) and Jonathan Hager, Pastor Kevin S. Munroe, of Zion Reformed United Church of Christ will be speaking on the topic “Faith in the Wilderness” at the Worship Service in City Park at the Hager House on September 21, at 11:00 am.    During Jonathan Hager’s time, there were few Houses of Worship in the budding Frederick and Washington County area, so ministers would have to travel around. In 1894, an old pewter communion chalice and flagon were found in the attic of an old schoolhouse in Walkersville. Made in 1747 by Christian Heine of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, this set is believed to have been used by the Rev. Michael Schlatter as he visited to congregations around Frederick and Washington County during the early days. The service will use the “Catoctin Cup” a replica of the chalice.   All are invited to participate in this service celebrating the beginning and importance of faith in this community. We hope you come and join us in celebrating the rich history that ties our community together.
