Now through August 1 - Applications being accepted for Highlight Hagerstown Awards

Nominations Being Accepted for 2014 Highlight Hagerstown Awards                  The Hagerstown Beautification Advisory Committee (HBAC) recognizes residents and businesses that contribute extra time and care in boosting the curb appeal of their properties through the annual Highlight Hagerstown Awards. Nominations are being accepted now through August 1, 2014.                   The HBAC is looking for various beautification projects that include upgrades to landscaping and trees, window boxes, flower beds and gardens, additional fencing and façade improvements. All the improvements must be visible from public streets.                   The HBAC would like the public’s help in finding these projects and to see that the people behind them are recognized for their hard work in beautifying the community. You can nominate a resident, a business or even yourself! Properties must be located within the limits of the City of Hagerstown.                   Winners will be selected by the HBAC and recognized by the Mayor & City Council during their Regular Session in late August. July 17 - Learn More about the Community's City Center Plan

  Learn More: Community's City Center Plan   Community members invited to take a closer look at downtown's future during public presentation                     Community members from Hagerstown and the greater Washington County area are invited to learn more about the Community's City Center Plan on Thursday, July 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room at the central branch of the Washington County Free Library. Mayor Dave Gysberts and the City's consulting firm, Urban Partners, will share plans for the eight catalyst projects that will help spur development in our downtown. Attendees will also learn how they can support the projects moving forward throughout the proposed 10-year timeline.                   The eight catalyst projects include:   Strategy for Office Development and Recruitment Maryland Theatre Expansion Project USMH Expansion Support Strategy Hotel/Conference Center and Heritage Center/Commemorative Park Linking City Park and A&E District with Trail and New Housing Expanded Downtown Arts/Events Programming Strategy Expanded Operations of the City Farmers Market Expanded & Targeted Home Ownership Support Strategies                   Broad community involvement is a priority in both the creation and the implementation of the plan. The Urban Partners consultants spent more than 130 hours collecting feedback from the community, which was incorporated in the the development of the eight catalyst projects. This presentation also provides the opportunity for participants to see how their thoughts and ideas were included in the plan.                                       The CIty's goal for the Community's City Center Plan is to develop a road map for the future that will geneate excitement and confidence in a common vision fo the downtown as a viable and intriguing place to work, conduct business, enjoy cultural and artistic events, dine out and shop, attend classes, and live. With the community's participation and support of this project, this vision can be realized.

July 12 - August 7 - Music by the Lake Concert Series

Music by the Lake Concert Series Line-Up Released                   Four consecutive Saturday summer evenings of family, friends and free music will begin this Saturday, July 12th with the Music by the Lake concert series. All of the free concerts will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the City Park Bandshell.                   This Saturday you can enjoy a rowdy good time with music from Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band of Madison, Virginia. Dark Hollow Bluegrass Band is well known for their great three-part harmony and traditional style singing.                   The series will continue on Saturday, July  19th with the Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition. Back by popular demand, the Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition is the premier bluegrass band in the Annapolis, Maryland area. A love of bluegrass is deeply ingrained in the souls of these five fine musicians, and they have been winning the hearts of bluegrass fans from all around the Chesapeake Bay.                   On July 26th, Ernie Bradley & The Grassy Ridge Band will take the stage at the bandshell. This band combines Ernie’s unique style on the banjo and other various instruments with hard driving rhythm of the guitar and strong tenor vocals; along with breathtaking fiddling, easy flowing bass playing, lead guitar breaks and spot-on rhythm. This premier band is hard to beat for fast-paced entertainment.                   Concluding the series is Stoney Creek - Libby Files on August 2nd. Stoney Creek Bluegrass Band features guitarist Ed Barney, banjo player Darrell Sanders, bassist Libby Files, and mandolin player Brett Smeltzer. Stoney Creek has a new sound of old bluegrass.   The City of Hagerstown, the Washington County Arts Council, and the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau are proud sponsors of the Music by the Lake concert series.   Don’t forget, you can hear the Hagerstown Municipal Band for free every Sunday at the Hagerstown City Park Bandshell at 7:30 p.m. until August 24th, 2014. The Hagerstown Municipal Band has been providing quality music for the area for 100 years, and on Sunday, July 13th a 100th Anniversary Season Concert will be performed.                   Attendees are encouraged to bring your lawn chairs or blankets.
