REACH Air Conditioner Program It's early, but the dog-days of summer are here. We have already experienced some hot, humid days in early June, so imagine what is coming right around the corner. REACH's Faith in Action program needs your help. We are seeking donations of new and/or gently used air conditioners, in good working order (REACH is unable to fix broken air conditioners).
There are many senior citizens and infants in our community, as well as those who suffer from heart disease, lung disease, cancer, AIDS/HIV, or other life threatening illnesses that can worsen from the summer’s heat, who are in desperate need and cannot afford to provide air conditioning for themselves or their loved one.
Help us to REACH out to someone in need by donating an air conditioner. Donated air conditioners must be window-type, room size and operate off 110 volt current and have all knobs, switches, etc., and expansion panels. If you'd rather donate the funds to purchase an air conditioner, REACH will buy them with your donations.
To receive an air conditioner, a 2008 Air Conditioner Program application and medical documentation is required. Applications may be picked up at the REACH Center, or will be mailed to homebound applicants. An application is attached!
Applications accepted: Now thru August 1st, 2008
Donations accepted: Now thru August 29th, 2008
Air conditioners will be distributed: June 2nd thru August 29th, 2008

Have a headache? Well, how about taking a Tansy pill? Got a toothache? Try
chewing on some Sage. A cough? Swallow some oil of Thyme. Need to study
for a big test? Put some Rosemary in your hair! The staff of the
Jonathan Hager House and Museum invite you to come learn about the
historical uses of some everyday herbs as we take a walk through the herb
gardens surrounding the Hager House on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 7:00
pm.
Aside from the medicinal uses you might expect, our 18th century ancestors would use herbs to help with some unusual things as well. According to John Bryan, Historic Sites Facilitator, "Herbs were not only used as medicine, but also as remedies for some things that we might consider a bit off the wall. For example, during the Middle Ages people believed that the Fennel herb was an antidote to witchcraft and that Thyme was effective in relieving hangovers. Visitors to the Hager House and Museum often ask, What is that plant? This program will be a wonderful opportunity for visitors of all ages the find out."
This free program will begin at 7:00 pm in the herb garden immediately to the left of the Jonathan Hager House. For further information about Herbs of Hager's Thyme or any of the upcoming programs and events at the City of Hagerstown's Historic Sites, please contact 301-739-8393 or email us at hagerhouse@hagerstownmd.org.

The
Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau is sponsoring a
trolley service between Discovery Station and Cushwa Basin on Saturday, June
14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The trolley is being provided so visitors can
experience both the new permanent C&O Canal Exhibit at Discovery Station and
the traveling National Park Canal exhibit at the Trolley Barn at Cushwa
Basin. The new permanent C&O Canal Exhibit at Discovery Station celebrates and explains the C&O Canal and its local significance. National Park Service staff from the C&O Canal assisted with the exhibit, which features interactive displays, memorabilia, photos, models, and other displays. It features some never-before-seen historical items, and also a movie filmed by Thomas Edison that has been digitally restored for this exhibit. The exhibit was made possible with grant funding from the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area and primary funding from the Washington County Gaming Commission.
The traveling canal exhibit at the Trolley Barn at Cushwa Basin uses hands-on stations to teach visitors about the canal’s locks, aqueducts, and bridges. "Visitors to the exhibit literally have the chance to touch and manipulate various aspects of the canal," said National Park Service Ranger Curt Gaul. The goal for C&O Canal National Historical Park is to bring the historical section of the canal at Williamsport back to life. The National Park Service and the C&O Canal Trust are working to restore the old railroad lift bridge so it can go up and down, and to have Lock 44 operating again. Future plans also include having canal excursion boat rides.
Williamsport will be the temporary home of the traveling canal exhibit until mid-October, and the C&O Canal National Historical Park is planning on securing its return from mid-April to October 2009. The well-known exhibit is free and open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The C&O Canal Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The exhibit has been visited by every 4th grade class in Washington County Public Schools.
The admission fee to Discovery Station is free for children under the age of 2, $6 for children ages 2-17, $7 for adults, and $5 for seniors over 65 and military id holders. Discovery Station is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
For more information about Discovery Station, see: www.discoverystation.org. For more information about the C&O Canal National Historical Park, see: www.nps.gov/choh. The C&O Canal NHP is Maryland's largest and most-visited national park. The C&O Canal National Historical Park and the Discovery Station hands-on family-friendly science museum are both members of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau. More Than 60 Planes Will Fly Into the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Saturday, June 14 The National Air and Space Museum presents its 2008 “Become a Pilot” family day and aviation display Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at its Udvar-Hazy center in Chantilly, Va. More than 60 vintage, recreational, military and home-built aircraft will be flown in for the event and displayed outdoors. Appearing with their aircraft parked outside the center’s huge Boeing Aviation Hangar, pilots will greet visitors and discuss life in the cockpit. In some cases, pilots will let visitors climb behind the controls. The day offers the public the rare chance to study working aircraft up close. Inside the museum, visitors can test flight simulators, meet model airplane experts and listen to a variety of guest speakers, including fighter pilot retired Capt. Kevin Miller and Joe Edwards, former NASA astronaut and Navy pilot. The U.S. Air Force band “Airmen of Note” will provide musical entertainment at noon. The event is free and open to the public. More information is available at http://www.nasm.si.edu/becomeapilot/. The participation of visiting aircraft in this event is weather contingent. Should inclement weather prevent those aircraft from taking part, family day activities inside the center will still occur. A list of participating aircraft is available at http://www.nasm.si.edu/becomeapilot/aircraft.cfm. The National Air and Space Museum building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is located at Sixth Street and Independence Avenue S.W. The museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is located in Chantilly, Va., near Washington Dulles International Airport. Both facilities are open daily from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (Closed Dec. 25) Admission is free, but there is a $12 fee for parking at the Udvar-Hazy center. |

Specific areas visited will include the beautiful Highland Scenic Highway, which reaches above 4,500 feet and offers spectacular views of the surrounding Allegheny Highlands, and the unique Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, an upland bog that is more reminiscent of Canada than the Mid-Atlantic U.S. Bird species breeding in these locations should include Alder and Least flycatchers, Swainson's and Hermit thrushes, Veerys, nuthatches, creepers, Red Crossbills, and a wide variety of warblers. The drive time from the Eastern Panhandle will be about 4.5 hours. After dinner, the group will drive to a couple of locations along the nearby Highland Highway to listen for thrushes, and perhaps take a short hike up Red Spruce Knob if time permits.
