museum is located 12 miles north of Antietam Battlefield and 35 miles
southwest of Gettysburg on the historic North-South road that was used
throughout the War. With more than 23,000 casualties, Antietam remains a day
of great loss for America and it stimulated a chain of events leading to the
Emancipation Proclamation and eventually the Battle of Gettysburg.
Hagerstown and the ground which later became the Hagerstown City Park were
involved areas for Union and Confederate troop movements for both battles.
