The Wyeth Family of Artists

September 10, 2011 — January 15, 2012

In celebration of the Museum's 80th Anniversary, the artistry of the Wyeth Family will be on view through loans from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and private collectors. Works by members of the Wyeth family and the impact of their influence on regional artists will be explored. Perhaps the best known family of American artists, the Wyeths were led by N. C. Wyeth (1882-1945), who illustrated tales by authors such as Robert Louis Stevenson. He will be represented by the oil on composition board, "Deep Cove Lobsterman." His son Andrew (1917-2009) chose the painstaking medium of egg tempera to paint rural topics that both summoned and subdued memories of his childhood. Two works by Andrew will be in the exhibition, "Young America," egg tempera on gesso board and "Wet Spring," watercolor and gouache. Andrew's son, James "Jamie" B. Wyeth, born in 1946, continues the family's ties to their past in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and coastal Maine. Two works by Jamie will be included, "Runaway Pig," 3-color etching and "The Hawks," drypoint. Also included will be works by artists from the extended families of Pyle, Wyeth and McCoy, as well as regional artists.
